His son looked confused. “Can’t I just ask ChatGPT?”
This is a small moment. Easy to dismiss as “kids these days.” But notice what’s happening beneath the surface:
The reflex to struggle through something is being replaced by the reflex to ask AI.
This isn’t about spelling. It’s about something most people aren’t willing to look at yet: We’re in the middle of a fundamental shift in how humans access and generate intelligence. And the architecture being built right now — quietly, efficiently, behind the friendly interface of helpful tools — will determine whether we remain sovereign thinkers who use AI, or dependent users who can’t function without it.
On October 6, 2025, OpenAI held its third annual developer conference. What they announced looked like progress: better tools, more features, faster models. The tech press celebrated. Developers cheered. Stock prices moved.
But if you look closely at what was actually unveiled, you’ll see something different taking shape. Something that should make you deeply uncomfortable, even as you find yourself reaching for these tools every day.
OpenAI isn’t building better AI products. They’re building the operating system for how humans access intelligence itself.
Let me show you what I mean.
What OpenAI Actually Announced
The numbers are staggering: OpenAI reports 800 million weekly ChatGPT users — roughly 10% of humanity using one AI interface every week. The platform processes 6 billion API tokens per minute through 4 million developers building on OpenAI’s infrastructure.
But the real story wasn’t in the usage stats. It was in four announcements that, when you see the pattern, reveal what’s actually being constructed:
Apps in ChatGPT: Third-party applications from Spotify, Canva, Booking.com, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, and Zillow now run directly inside the ChatGPT interface. You can say “Spotify, make me a playlist for my Friday party” and the Spotify app appears within the chat, generates playlists, and lets you edit them — all without leaving ChatGPT.
AgentKit: A comprehensive toolkit for building AI agents that can autonomously complete complex workflows. It includes visual drag-and-drop builders, connection registries for linking agents to data across systems, and evaluation frameworks for testing agent performance. OpenAI framed this as “making agent development accessible to everyone.”
Codex General Availability: OpenAI’s autonomous software engineering agent moved from research preview to general release. Codex can write features, fix bugs, answer questions about codebases, work on multiple tasks simultaneously, and iterate until tests pass — all while you’re away from your computer. In his keynote, CEO Sam Altman said: “Software used to take months or years to build. You saw that it can take minutes now. You don’t need a huge team. You need a good idea, and you can just sort of bring it to reality faster than ever before.”
Infrastructure Lock-In: New models (GPT-5-pro at $15 per million input tokens), cheaper voice models (70% cost reduction), Sora 2 video generation for developers, and a 6-gigawatt computing partnership with AMD involving equity warrants tied to deployment milestones.
On the surface: Innovation. Accessibility. Progress.
But here’s what nobody’s saying out loud.
The Pattern You’re Not Seeing
Remember that episode of Black Mirror — “Fifteen Million Merits” — where people pedal bikes to generate power and the entire world is screens you can’t turn off?
The horror wasn’t the bikes. It was that the characters couldn’t imagine a reality outside the system.
Let’s look at that first announcement again — apps in ChatGPT.
You used to open Spotify. Browse. Discover. Build playlists yourself. Yes, it took longer. But you were choosing.
Now you say “make me a playlist” and ChatGPT does it through Spotify’s integration.
Next month, you won’t remember you can open Spotify directly. Why would you? ChatGPT is right there. It already knows your taste. It’s faster.
Six months from now, when someone says “open Spotify,” you’ll think: Why? Just ask ChatGPT.
The app didn’t disappear. Your relationship to it inverted.
You’re not using Spotify through ChatGPT. You’re using ChatGPT, which happens to access Spotify as a backend service.
This is the same move Google made with search. You stopped going directly to websites. You Googled first. Google became the layer between you and the internet.
Now OpenAI is becoming the layer between you and everything.
When 10% of humanity accesses intelligence through one interface, that’s not just market dominance — that’s reality architecture at species scale.
And it’s happening so smoothly you barely notice the shift.
The Sovereignty Question You Haven’t Asked Yourself
Here’s an uncomfortable question:
Could you do your job tomorrow if ChatGPT disappeared?
Not “would it be inconvenient” — could you actually do it?
For a growing number of knowledge workers, the honest answer is no. Or not well. Or not at the speed their job requires.
You didn’t decide to become dependent. It just happened, one helpful interaction at a time.
When was the last time you:
– Did mental math instead of asking ChatGPT?
– Tried to recall a fact before searching?
– Worked through a coding problem without AI assistance?
– Wrote a full draft before asking for AI edits?
I’m not judging. I do this too. The tools are genuinely helpful. That’s why the shift is so smooth. It doesn’t feel like loss — it feels like efficiency.
But here’s the thing about efficiency: it optimizes you right out of capability.
Now let’s make it more uncomfortable.
What if ChatGPT stayed exactly the same, but YOU changed? What if your ability to think deeply, hold complexity, or generate original insight atrophied because you haven’t used those muscles in two years?
The platform can’t take that away from you. You’re giving it away.
This isn’t theoretical. Ask yourself:
– Do you trust your own judgment more or less than you did a year ago?
– When you have an idea, do you test it or ask AI if it’s good?
– Can you still write something you’re proud of without AI assistance?
– Are you learning new things, or optimizing old patterns?
If those questions make you uncomfortable, that discomfort is signal.
It means you’re sensing what most people aren’t willing to look at yet: The things you’re delegating to AI aren’t just tasks. They’re skills. And skills atrophy when unused.
This is cognitive dependency. And unlike platform dependency (where you can theoretically switch providers), cognitive dependency is about whether you can still think without assistance.

– OpenAI’s models (they control the intelligence)
– OpenAI’s connectors (they control the integrations)
– OpenAI’s infrastructure (they control availability and pricing)
Every agent you build there makes it harder to leave. Every workflow increases switching costs. Every integration deepens the moat around your dependency.
You’ve built 47 agents in AgentKit. You have 200 workflows. Your company runs on this. Then OpenAI raises prices 5x.
How long does migration take? What breaks? Who do you become during that transition?
This is the Hotel California strategy: Check in anytime you like, but you might never leave.
We’ve seen this pattern with:

Year 4: Senior developers realize they haven’t written raw code in 18 months. They’ve been managing AI agents. When they try to code without assistance, they’re rusty. They’re slower. They’ve forgotten patterns they used to know.
Year 5: A generation of developers never learned to code deeply. They learned to prompt, to manage agents, to QA AI output. But the foundational skill — thinking in code — atrophied before it fully developed.

If “just ask AI” becomes default, what happens to the intrinsic motivation that drives open source? If the answer is “AI will maintain it,” you get a recursive training collapse — AI training on AI-generated code, with no human ground truth.
The whole software ecosystem depends on humans who code for reasons other than efficiency. If that motivation gets replaced by “let AI do it,” who builds the substrate AI trains on?
This isn’t speculation. This is the documented pattern of every tool that replaces human capability:
We stopped reading maps when GPS arrived. Most people under 30 can’t navigate without it.
We stopped doing mental math when calculators became ubiquitous. Most adults reach for their phone to split a dinner bill.
We stopped remembering phone numbers when contacts synced to the cloud.
The pattern is: The tool becomes the capability. And when the tool goes away, so does the skill.
The Chips: Why This Is About Power, Not Just Performance
That AMD announcement — 6 gigawatts of computing power with equity warrants — seems like a side note.
It’s not.
AI models are expensive to run. Computing power is the scarce resource. By locking in massive chip supply with aligned incentives, OpenAI is building a computational moat that competitors can’t cross.
Meanwhile, they’re pricing intelligence in tiers:
– Cheap models for basic tasks
– Premium reasoning models for complex work
Intelligence is becoming a commodity you buy by the gallon.
And like any commodity market, there will be:
– Premium tiers for those who can pay
– Budget options for those who can’t
– Scarcity dynamics that drive prices
– Market power concentrated in whoever controls supply
Think about what that means:
When electricity became essential infrastructure, we decided it should be regulated as a public utility. We recognized that monopolistic control over essential resources creates dangerous power imbalances.
Now we’re making intelligence essential infrastructure and treating it as a private market. High-quality reasoning becomes expensive (GPT-5 pro at $15/million tokens vs. budget models).
This isn’t “democratizing AI.” This is creating a two-tier intelligence economy where:
– Rich people and companies get access to best reasoning
– Everyone else gets access to commodity models
This isn’t speculation. It’s already happening. And nobody’s asking the regulation question.
What About Education?
Here’s what’s missing from almost every AI conversation:
What happens when entire school systems integrate AI-first learning?
Khan Academy has AI tutors. ChatGPT Edu is rolling out to universities. Duolingo uses GPT-4 for personalized instruction.
This looks like progress. Personalized learning! Adaptive instruction! Students getting help 24/7!
But if kids never develop baseline capabilities because “just ask AI” is standard practice from age 6, what does that generation look like at age 25?
When you outsource:
– Spelling to autocorrect
– Math to calculators
– Research to AI
– Writing to AI assistants
– Problem-solving to AI agents
What capability remains?
The ability to prompt effectively? To evaluate AI output? To manage AI agents?
Those are valuable skills. But they’re second-order skills. They require AI infrastructure to have any meaning.
First-order skills — the ability to think, create, solve problems independently — are being trained out of the next generation.
And we’re calling it educational innovation.
The Jony Ive Device: When Intelligence Becomes Hardware
OpenAI didn’t just hold DevDay last week.
They also reminded us of their $6.4 billion acquisition of Jony Ive’s AI device startup.
Jony Ive. The designer of the iPhone, iPad, iPod, and MacBook. The person who made technology feel magical and inevitable.
Now he’s designing hardware where:
– ChatGPT is the operating system
– Apps run natively inside conversational interfaces
– Agents handle your workflows autonomously
– Everything connects to OpenAI’s cloud
This isn’t coming someday. This is being built right now.
And when it ships — probably within 18–24 months — it will be beautiful. Seamless. Intuitive. Indispensable.
Just like the iPhone felt in 2007.
Within five years of the iPhone launch, most of the developed world carried smartphones everywhere. We stopped remembering directions, phone numbers, or how to be bored.
We gained convenience. We lost something harder to name. Presence, maybe. Self-reliance. The ability to be alone with our thoughts without reflexively reaching for stimulation.
Jony Ive didn’t just make Apple products work — he made them feel inevitable. The iPhone didn’t succeed because it was better; it succeeded because picking it up felt like the future.
Now he’s applying that design language to cognitive dependency.
When it ships, dependency won’t feel like loss — it will feel like arriving home.
The most inevitable technologies are the ones that feel like magic. And Jony Ive has spent 30 years perfecting how to make technology feel like magic.
The Counter-Argument You’re Probably Thinking
Look, I know what you’re thinking: “This is just Luddite fear-mongering. Every technology that augmented humans was feared.”
The counter-argument is strong:
Writing was going to destroy memory (Socrates said this). Printing was going to destroy truth. Calculators were going to destroy math ability. And yet, humanity got smarter, not dumber, because we integrated tools without losing agency.
That’s true. And it’s an important pattern.
But here’s the critical distinction:
If we’re learning AI-assisted thinking as a skill we control, we’re fine.
If we’re outsourcing thinking to AI and losing the ability to think without it, we’re in trouble.
The difference is conscious integration vs. blind adoption.
And right now, most people are on the autopilot path.
You might also be thinking: “You use these tools too — isn’t this hypocritical?”
Yes, I use AI daily. I used AI to research parts of this article. I’m not arguing for rejection — I’m arguing for consciousness.
The question isn’t “should we use AI?” It’s:
– Am I using it to accelerate what I already know, or replace knowing?
– Am I building on it in ways I can leave, or getting locked in?
– Am I maintaining capability, or outsourcing it?
These distinctions matter. And most people aren’t making them because they don’t realize there’s a choice.
One more counter-argument: “Individual action doesn’t matter — this is systemic.”
That’s partially true. If your employer mandates AI tools, requires Codex integration, standardizes on ChatGPT — your personal sovereignty choices become constrained.
But that’s exactly why the moment to build alternatives is now.
If every company standardizes on OpenAI infrastructure, opting out means opting out of employment in your field.
If every educational institution trains on AI-assisted learning without preserving foundational skills, the next generation won’t have a choice about dependency — it will be the only option they know.
This is about preserving optionality at the infrastructure level, not just personal practice.
What Conscious Integration Actually Looks Like
I’m not arguing for rejecting AI. The capabilities are real.
But there’s a difference between blind adoption and conscious integration.
Here’s what that looks like practically:
1. The 80/20 Sovereignty Rule
If you can’t do 80% of your critical work at 80% capacity without AI assistance, you’re dependent, not augmented.
Test this monthly. When you fail the test, pause AI usage for that domain until you rebuild baseline capability.
This isn’t about purity. It’s about maintaining optionality.
2. Build on Infrastructure You Control
Use AI through abstraction layers (LangChain, OpenRouter, LlamaIndex) so you can swap providers via configuration file. Never build directly on one vendor’s API unless you’re prepared to treat that investment as disposable.
Run your own MCP servers where possible. Store embeddings and evaluations in YOUR infrastructure, not theirs.

Before using AI for a task, ask: “If this tool disappeared, could I teach someone how to do this?”
If no, you’ve outsourced understanding, not just execution. That’s where dependency starts.
For teams: Run monthly “AI-off” drills for critical thinking — code sprints without Codex, strategy sessions using AI for research but not synthesis.
Track what capabilities you’re delegating vs. maintaining. Document dependencies and fallback processes.
4. Multi-Vendor Strategy
Don’t build everything on one platform. Distribute risk:

For policy makers: Is intelligence essential infrastructure? Should it be regulated like utilities? What frameworks prevent monopolistic control while enabling innovation?
For developers and engineers: What are you actually optimizing for? Engagement metrics and efficiency? Or sustained human capability alongside AI augmentation? The features you build today become the constraints tomorrow.
For organizational leaders: What’s your sovereignty strategy? If your primary AI vendor raised prices 10x tomorrow or changed terms, how does that affect your operations and strategic plans? Dependency isn’t always visible until it’s tested.
For educators: How do you preserve foundational capabilities while integrating AI assistance? If students never develop baseline skills because “ask AI” is always available, what are they actually learning?
For researchers: What does conscious integration look like at scale? What frameworks help humans maintain agency in AI-mediated reality? This is infrastructure design, not just individual practice.
For anyone building alternatives: You’re not alone. The sovereign infrastructure pieces exist but aren’t coordinated. How do we make them visible? How do we connect distributed builders working on the same problems?
The infrastructure for human sovereignty in AI-mediated reality isn’t owned by any one group. It’s a field-level question.
What will you build?
